Litoplas, a merger between LITOCOSTA and PLASTICOSTA, es is a product of the vision of the future of its founder, Luis Mora Martin-Mora, a Spanish immigrant born in 1924. In 1949, after leaving as a héroe de Guerra in 1.942, our founder ventured into trading, which led him on a trip that ended with his arrival in Barranquilla and the subsequent revolution of the packaging industry in the Colombian Caribbean.
In 1955, with the wish of venturing into the market, he took his first steps in the business of repackaged products. He packaged oil, spices and sauces in jars. A year later, moved by his interest in flexible wrappers, Luis Mora Martin-Mora detected the need to manufacture small packages for his food products in order to reach the large consumer market, and for this reason he initiated contacts with Celanese.
In 1.957, he built a cutting machine to supply 10-cm packages to wrap his spices. A year later he formally named his company as “Productos Deportivo“.
Luis Mora Martin-Mora, studied the market needs and with a vision of the future in 1960 he ventured into the world of printed products, building his own 2-ink printing machine exclusively for his own business’s packaging. Under his main principles for survival, flexibility and the capacity to adapt to constant market changes, Luis Mora Martin-Mora built his second 4-color printing machine, to cover his own needs and those of other factories.
In 1967, Luis Mora Martin-Mora decided to refocus his business and sold the «Deportivo» spices company. From that time on, he concentrated on the world of flexible packaging, and ultimately in 1970 he incorporated by public deed the flexible packaging company named Empresa Litográfica de la Costa (LITOCOSTA), under a philosophy of high technology, flexibility and capacity to adapt to customers’ needs.
Afterwards, in order to adapt to the constant changes in the market, Luis Mora Martin-Mora saw the need to manufacture his own polyethylene film in different sizes, and in 1977 he ventured into the polyethylene extrusion world by creating the company Empresa Plásticos de la Costa (PLASTICOSTA), which was dedicated exclusively to the production of plastics, consolidating its first building and process-based management.
Given that both Litocosta and Plasticosta had been built under a philosophy of high technology, during the 1980s we achieved 3 major milestones: in 1985 a new property was acquired to install the new printing machines and organize the areas; in 1986 we entered the computer age, and in 1989 we acquired the first printing machine with a computerized central drum and quality control equipment.
During the 1990s, we experienced accelerated expansion of capacity and infrastructure. It began in 1992 with the acquisition of facility lI, later known as Litocosta warehouse, and the investment in a new 6-color printing machine and the acquisition of a new Laminating machine in 1993 to cover market needs and expand into laminated products.
With the vision of building an industrial park, in 1994 we acquired the first 10,000 meters of the property on the Circunvalar highway, we expanded capacity with a second laminating machine, and true to our philosophy we began the modernization of the Cyrel and set-up areas.
In 1996, the Litoplas community already had 229 employees and a character who represented us, Plastilito. That year we achieved greater market recognition, winning the Andinapack-96 Gold Medal in CREATIVITY for the sugar sachet of Ingenio Manuelita, and the Silver Medal in INNOVATION for the one-liter handle of Coolechera.
In 1997 our founder passed away, and his main features became the organization’s legacy through his values and corporate philosophy.
In 1998, we won the Andinapack-98 Gold Medal, unique in Colombia, for the design of a three-layer package to protect coffee.ara la Protección del café.
In 1998, we began construction of the Circunvalar facility and Litoplas was incorporated by public deed. The final merger of the two companies Litocosta and Plasticosta was formalized in 1999 with the Inauguration of Litoplas. We began the operations of Stage 1 with a first 6-color printing machine and moving Litocosta to these new facilities. At that time, they were no longer two complementary companies, but a single company operating at two plants: Plant 1 Centro and Plant 2 Circunvalar.
In 2008, we completed Stage 3, expanding the right side of the processing area, Erema and cafeteria areas; and added narrow-band printers (3, 9) and cutter 10, which enable quick change-overs, as well as video cameras and a jump from 200 to 360 meters.
In 2009, we unified operations at a single plant (moved plant 1, also called Stage 3b)
In 2011, we invested in technology and new process improvements, such as:
Restrictions Theory Planning Model, including conceptual changes such as the difference between the overall optimal and the local optimal, methodologies and software such as load handling, winding, save set up and full kit of processes.
In the second semester we started up the Maintenance Management organization project, incorporating predictive maintenance and root cause analysis (RCA).
The self-generation plant began operations in the last quarter of the year, positioning us as the first processing company in the country to generate its own power, which provides us reliability for operations continuity.
The start-up of the solvent distiller enabled us to optimize the Solvents network, contributing to environmental sustainability.
The installation of new INELME equipment for printer 8 enabled us to optimize the use of solvents for cleaning operations.
Litoplas opened its doors to its employees’ families as a demonstration of recognition and trust in our fundamental pillar.
We began the program of operator certification in basic quantitative variables and the implementation of the Product Quality Control (CCP) tool, which provides information in real time of the specifications that will guarantee sustainability order by order.
In 2012 we completed Stage 4, whose main feature is operational effectiveness, printers with 100% inspection and design for short and long runs, to offer improved overall costs, taking the leap to runs of 500 m. During this period we also enhanced our Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), moved to on-line development, and we won the Business Merit Award granted by Universidad Simón Bolívar, in the Industrial-Manufacturing category, highlighting the quality of our processes and technological innovation. We received this award for a second time in 2013.
In 2013, we incorporated our spin-off Polyrec, strengthening the pelletization program as part of our value proposition for our value chain.
In 2014, we obtained the AIB international rating for manufacturing facilities of packaging materials in contact with foods.
We were awarded recognition as Exemplary Supplier of Grupo Nutresa in the packaging material category.
We completed Stage 5. With the concept of packaging of value we initiated collaborative processes with our customers and suppliers, and we worked on automation and the improvement of processing conditions, through air conditioning to improve extended range ink stability, improvement of food safety control, and workplace conditions; latest generation digital equipment to manufacture plates, laser table for automatic plate cutting and CDI with high resolution optics, automatic mounting, large-format printer with GPS, 100% inspection and monitoring of consumption on line and interface with our ERP; laminator with automatic splicing, on-line consumption monitoring and interface with our ERP; 2 cutters 100% synchronized with roll handling equipment, on-line monitoring of consumption and interface with our ERP; and roll handling equipment to mitigate risk in product change-overs and cross-contamination, reduction of ergonomic risks.
We evolved our business model towards the higher purpose of “rationalization and sustainability” and of our flexible packaging management to comprehensive packaging advisory, working on the evolution of the design of packaging under the concept of “life cycle assessment” and orienting the team’s efforts towards building of trust and creation of value, initiating the implementation of our new philosophy of partnerships, consolidating our model of packaging of value. During this year, we also adhered to the United Nations Global Compact, committing to its principles and sustainable development. For the second time we were awarded recognition as exemplary supplier by Grupo Nutresa in the packaging material category, and for the third time we earned the Business Merit Award in the Industrial and Manufacturing category granted by Universidad Simón Bolívar, and we unified our corporate philosophy in our first Comprehensive Code of Conduct, centralizing all our corporate policies
We won the Award for Good Environmental Practices of the Global Compact Colombia Network, in the practice “Generating differentiation through the circular economy,” and we received recognition as exemplary supplier of Grupo Nutresa in the category of environmental and social sustainability.
We implemented an Oracle cloud ERP to reduce risks and prepare the consolidation of the different plants and business units. We strengthened the partnerships strategy through price formula agreements. We issued our first Sustainability Report, reporting our progress in fulfilling the principles of the Global Compact and the Sustainable Development Goals. We completed the first materiality analysis and matrix of corporate maturity as an Organizational Roadmap. We strengthened cleaning and disinfection practices and changed the rotating shifts system as part of the strategy to prevent the risk of COVID contagion. We developed the safe and ethical trade subsystem, which integrates the corporate ethics and anti-bribery practices with policies to counter money laundering and financing of terrorism, protection of intellectual property and personal data. We adhered to the Acoplásticos collaborative environmental network plan as part of our extended responsibility as producers and we supported the consolidation of operation of a new Polyrec plant focusing on post-consumption recycling.
We completed Stage 6, which enables Litoplas to significantly expand its portfolio with products that enhance closure of the cycle, protection and functionality features, through the implementation of a new extrusion by lamination machine, becoming pioneers in Latin America, the co-generation of electricity and the expansion of warehouse spaces for synchronized sourcing, creating a new warehouse called Plant 3.
